Winnipeg was given the recognition by the Intelligent Community Forum at its Virtual Global Summi as its 2021 Intelligent Community of the Year.
Previously, the city has also been honoured nine-time Smart21 Community and four-time Top7 Community since first entering the program in 2011.
Winnipeg was selected after more than a year of evaluation that included a quantitative analysis of extensive data, virtual site inspections by an Intelligent Community Forum co-founder and votes from an international jury made up of experts from around the world.
Among the factor considered were city’s innovation projects, digital inclusion and capabilities and strong partnerships between universities and major employers that have created everything from large fabrication labs to digital equipment upgrades and micro-credential workshops that generate new products, new companies, and new jobs.
Mayor Brian Bowman in a news release said that this citation is a is strong validation that Winnipeg is a consistent competitor with cities from around the world. “With a population that is expected to continue growing to a million people, Winnipeg is truly a world-class place to call home”, Bowman added.
The other six finalists that made it to the list that competed with Winnipeg were Binh Duong Smart City, Vietnam; Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil; Langley Township, British Columbia, Canada; Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; Moscow, Russia; and Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
