Winnipeg, Manitoba – September 21, 2021. CKJS, an ethnic station founded in 1974 by Casimir Stanczykowski, also founder of CFMB Montreal, began testing today for its conversion from the AM to the FM band. Subsequent to the initial ownership, CKJS was operated by Newcap Broadcasting from 2006 to 2011 until it was acquired by Evanov Communications Inc. The CRTC has since approved the conversion from 810 AM to 92.7 FM.
Once testing is completed, the station will simulcast for the allowed 3-month period. There will be no over-the-air change as the station will continue to direct programming to at least 19 cultural groups in at least 16 different languages, chief among them the Winnipeggers of Filipino, South Asian and European descent. Local programming in each broadcast week includes Top 40 international music, ethnic music, discussions on topics of interest and reporting on community events, festivals and traditions, medical and financial news, school closings, news, traffic and weather.
CKJS on FM will have its transmitter on a brand-new broadcast tower built and owned by ECI. Company President and CEO, Paul Evanov said: “We cherish Ethnic Station CKJS because of the heritage value it delivers to the various local communities it serves. It is an integral part of our Winnipeg cluster which includes CHWE-FM and CFJL-FM. The building of a brand-new broadcast tower during the current pandemic and industry-wide challenges should be a measure of how we will not hesitate to continue to make major investments in the market.”
CKJS is one of 16 radio stations operated by Evanov Communications Inc., https://evanov.ca/. For more information on CKJS please visit, www.CKJS.com
