Filipino-Canadian Shawn Maranan, point guard for the Winnipeg Wesmen, was selected by the Winnipeg Sea Bears to play in the Canadian Elite Basketball League  (CEBL) draft summer of 2024.  He is the third player from the Wesmen to ever be selected for the summer professional league.  Maranan follows Jelane Pryce and Narcisse Ambanza as former Wesmen who were  drafted into the CEBL.

After spending the first 2023 season with the Sea Bears on the practice squad, Maranan was selected with the 28th overall pick in the draft, which earned him a position on the active roster.  Players from U Sports can participate in the professional league through the CEBL Draft without compromising their ability to attend university.

The Sisler High School alumnus concluded his fourth season of eligibility in 2023, setting career highs in assists per game, steals, and free throws, and putting himself in the conversation  among the nation’s   best point guards. For the second time in his career, he was selected as a Canada West second-team all-star. At the Final 8 in Quebec City, he also earned competition all-star status.  Maranan got better as the season went along, averaging 13.3 points, 8.6 assists and 2.2 steals per game over the final 10 conference games, while posting three double-doubles in that span.    In the post-season, he averaged 21.8 points and 10 assists per game.

The 2024 draft picks represent 20 different Canadian schools with each CEBL franchise making three selections.
