The Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library (MCML) will collaborate with the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba Inc (PCCM) to curate an exhibit dedicated to Filipino handicrafts and artifacts in the summer of 2024. This is the museum’s first time highlighting Filipino creativity and ingenuity through arts and crafts.
Speaking with Chester Pangan on 92.7 FM “Good Morning Philippines” today, Dante Aviso, PCCM Board Member, calls on the Filipino community in Manitoba for traditional and historical handicrafts of significance to Filipino culture, tradition, and custom.
Ana Ilagan, communications and engagement assistant, MCLC says “The museum will just borrow the items but will be happy to accept permanent gifts to be part of our collections. ” Anne said items can range from jewelry, handwoven fabrics, clothes, pottery, wood carvings or things like “kudkuran ng niyog” (native coconut grater). “
The exhibit will run from July 5 to August 31, 2024. Work will be done at MCML from mid-June to mid September 2024 to allow for installation and deinstallation. MCML provides insurance for products on loan. The things to be displayed may or may not include the name of the owner/donor, depending on their preference. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2024.
Entrance to MCLC is free year round. MCML holds exhibits dedicated to preserving the heritage though education and in promoting “a way of life that values the handmade”. It has its origins in the early years of the Crafts Guild of Manitoba. They cover a variety of hand work that include needlework, quilting, weaving, lace, rug hooking, ceramics, wood, glass and more.
