New benefits for Canadians unable to work due to COVID-19 open today

Starting today, October 5th, Canadians still struggling amid effect of COVID-19 can apply for new financial support packages from the federal government.

The two programs open for application today include a new caregiver benefit that provides 500-dollars per week for up to 26-weeks, and a new sick-leave benefit  of up to one-thousand-dollars for those forced to stay home because of the illness.

This includes situations in which a child or other dependent has either caught COVID-19 and can’t go to school or daycare, or in which schools, daycares or day programs and facilities are closed because of the illness.

The new sick-leave benefit will be up to $1,000 for Canadians forced to stay home because they have become infected or have to isolate because of the illness.

A third new program called Canada Response Benefit replaces the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and is the main support program for those unable to work due to COVID-19. This will also pay $500 per week for up to 26 weeks and will open Oct. 12.

Eligible Canadians can apply through the Canada Revenue Agency website at: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency.html
