Dubbed “Tala for Taal”, about 70 Winnipegers braved the minus 23 degrees celcius windchill and made their way to dance together to raise funds to help victims of Taal Volcano eruption.
The high-spirited crowd led by Zumba and fitness instructors and Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy kids flocked to the Garden City Grounds on January 19, 2020 to dance “Tala”.
“I never felt old doing Tala. I was motivated to learn the steps because it was for a good cause. It was fun and I met new friends!“, mused Helen Ko Young Jaime.
Tala” (Filipino for star) is a song by Filipino singer Sarah Geronimo that received a new level of popularity three years after its release when it started as a dance challenge through social media in the Philippines.
Brave and daring was how one of the organizers Kelly Legaspi describe the energy. *The support of the community was overwhelming.”
John Zee (who came wearing only shorts with a matching cape blanket) came with his fellow Zumba Instructors(ZIN) to show support to the cause.
“Whatever help extended to our kababayans, whether big or small, makes a difference in helping ease their burden”, John said.
CKJS 810 AM joined 204 Live Music and Rhia Alcantara-Reader for The Filipino Channel Balitang Amerika in covering the event.
“Tala for Taal” Winnipeg was a joint effort of all participants and was made possible through the initiative of Kelly, Fran Vasu and JP Sumbillo and his team at 204 Live Music.
