Swedish furniture maker Ikea opened its biggest store in the world in the Philippines Thursday, with the new 730,000 square foot facility. Graced by the country’s trade secretary Ramon Lopez and foreign minister Teodoro Locsin, Ikea’s famous favorite Swedish meatballs were served during the opening with a twist — adobo sauce. The retail space of more than twice the usual IKEA stores.
Located at the SM Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City, the store’s opening was delayed due to the pandemic, with an online booking system full for the next two weeks.
The first branch in the country houses a two-level 270,000 square foot store, dining area and showroom; warehouses; an e-commerce facility and a call center. The showrooms will also feature furnishings aesthetic of typical Filipino homes.
Ikea now has more than 460 physical stores in about 60 markets and is planning to add nearly 60 more locations in different regions including Asia and South America.
