Three-time Grand Slam champ, 17-year old Alexandra Eala defeated Juniors World No. 3 Lucie Havlickova, 6-2, 6-4, in the 2022 US Open Tennis Championship Girls Final round held this weekend.
Eala becomes the first Filipina to win the title.
This adds to her Grand Slam list of two girls doubles championships, from the 2020 Australian Open and the 2021 French Open.
“This victory is not only mine but ours,” she tearfully told the crowd after thanking her family, coaches, and fans in fluent Filipino.
Born and raised in Quezon City, Philippines, Eala moved to study in Spain after she was offered a scholarship at the Rafa Nadal Academy at 13 years old.
At just 14 years old, Eala made her junior debut at the 2019 US Open.
Her mother Rizza Maniego-Eala is a former national swimmer, She is the niece of now Philipine Sports Commision Chair Noli Eala.
