(Winnipeg, MB) – At a community luncheon on Saturday, May 28th, five outstanding and inspiring Filipino-Canadian women were recognized for their invaluable contributions to their respective fields and for their outstanding accomplishments that have made a positive difference to the Filipino community, as well as to the mainstream community in Manitoba. They are:
Police Constable Maria Buduhan – because of her advocacy for victims of crime and violence. She was also honoured for trailblazing the representation of Filipino women in law enforcement, a rarely travelled career path for many.
Dean Mariciel Nuyda – for being the first Filipino woman immigrant to become a Dean at the School for Continuing Studies for Booth University College. She was also honoured for advocating education and continuous learning.
Virginia (Jean) Guiang Santoro – for being the first and only Filipino woman to be given the Order of Manitoba (2004). A recipient of the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards 2020, and is a well-known outstanding community leader in Winnipeg.
Dr. Crystal Paculan – for being the first Filipino woman to be licensed as a Chiropractor in Manitoba. She was also honoured for her advocacy to help people gain optimum health through chiropractic and empower people towards optimal health and function.
Gina Trinidad – for being the first Filipino woman and visible minority at the senior executive level in the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority where she currently serves as Chief Health Operations Officer for Continuing Care & Community Health Services .
The Pinays Manitoba 2022 Trailblazers Recognition Luncheon was attended by representatives from the three levels of government, friends and families of the awardees, sponsors and other community members. It was held at the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba.
The annual Trailblazers Awards Recognition Luncheon was organized by a group of women called Pinays Manitoba. Founded in 2016, it is a non-profit, registered community organization dedicated to the support and empowerment of Filipino women in Manitoba.
