Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham favors re-opening the city’s most famous intersection to pedestrian to save commuters from a half-decade of traffic delays.
In a live interview with 92.7FM’s Chester Pangan, Gillingham says the plan to reopen Portage and Main is a response to a new city report on the traffic impact and cost of repairing the Portage and Main underground. The report goes to the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development today, March 7th. He said the city will draft a motion that calls for Portage and Main to be reopened to pedestrian traffic by the summer of 2025 coinciding the launch of the new transit route network.
The Mayor also shares the excitement that this year, the city celebrates the 35th anniversary of sisterhood with the city of Manila in the Philippines. He invites the large Filipino community in Manitoba to join in celebrating Winnipeg’s 150th anniversary this year in various festivities which includes the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.
