The month of June is recognized as Filipino Heritage Month in Manitoba and throughout Canada.
The official kick-off of the month-long celebration in the province was held at the Manitoba Legislative building yesterday June 1st, 2023 with Premier Heather Stephanson leading the unfurling of the monumental 30ftx60ft Philippine Super Flag.
Also in the event were Ministers Jon Reyes (Labour & Immigration), Obby Khan (Sport, Culture, and Heritage) and Audrey Gordon (Health) and other members of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly that included Cindy Lamoureux (Tyndall Park), Kevin Klein (Kirkland Park), Mintu Sandhu (Maples) and Diljeet Brar (Burrows) who earlier read a Private Member Statement recognizing the valuable contributions of the Filipino community in Manitoba and in Canada.
Filipino community leaders who came for the significant event included Rolando Opina (Philippine Honorary Consul) Perla Javate (President, Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba), Virgie Gayot (President, Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba, Dante Aviso and Ann Evangelista (Winnipeg School Division School Trustees) and Aida Champagne (co-chair Manitoba Filipino Street Festival.
Event maters of ceremonies were Ron Cantiveros and Randy Viray.
