Filipino high school student Carl Audric Guia from University of the Philppines Los Banos Rural High School had hoped to get a scholarship from at least one university in the United States but got accepted to more than one.
After going though the application process, which he describes as “very stressful time”, Guia received e-mails saying he has been accepted to Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford to pursue his dream field of Astronomy. All of these institutions offered him financial aid awards covering tuition, housing, food, travel, and even health insurance.
Guia was motivated to study in the United States because he said there are “limited options” in the Philippines when it comes to his interest field —which is astronomy.
In a report from Philstar, Guia shared the reason he was accepted by said Ivy Leauge and stressed it is not just about high academic achievements.
“Doing well in school will get your foot in the door, but grades and test scores might not always be enough. It’s also important to showcase your personality, and the best way to do this is by pursuing activities that genuinely interest you. I guess finding out about your interests and having the initiative to pursue them can go a long way,”
He also mentioned writing essays that ranged anywhere from 650 words to as short as 200 characters that showed his way thinking and personality, which he said, were equally important.
