“Pabasa” is a Filipino word coined approximately during 16th – 17th Century with the colonization of Spain to the Philippines and the spread of Catholicsm among Filipinos.
Every Holy week, the large Filipino community in Winnipeg observe the traditon of “Pabasa.” Church with large Pinoy parishioners usually hold Pabasa on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
During the “Pabasa”, the life, passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ are chanted using text from “the book Pasyong Mahal” or “Mahal na Passion ni Jesuchristong Panginoon Natin na Tola” written by Gaspar Aquino De Belen in 1704, it is the first dated “Pasyon” text, consisting of 980 verses. Another popular version is the “Pasyon Henesis” or “Pasyon Pilapil” written in 1814.
The Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg headed by Aida Champagne has been doing the “Pabasa ng Pasyon” since thirty years ago.
For those who like to experience it, the Pabasa starts 6PM on April 6 Thursday and continues up to 3PM April 7 . Friday at Filipino Seniors Group Hall at 49 Euclid.
The Pinoy Alliance of Canada will also be hosting Station of the Cross at 9AM on Friday at the hall.
