A glimpse of Philippine history in Winnipeg as the 50th anniversary of Martial Law declaration in the Philippines is observed this year.
A rundown of activities are lined-up today, Friday, September 23 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights at the Forks, Winnipeg.
The event called “Balik-Tanaw: Martial Law at 50” (Looking Back: Martial Law at 50) will showcase a guided virtual tour , a whole day exhibit, a film showing and a cultural night.
The Martial Law Exhibit will be open to the general public from 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM. with a special guided tour at 10:00 AM.
The award-winning film THE KINGMAKER will be shown at 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM respectively, followed by an open forum with Marichu Antonio, a martial law victim and survivor.
Antonio was the recipient of the 2020 Calgary’s Citizen of the Year Award as well as the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2017.
The event concludes with a cultural celebration at 7:00 PM, featuring some local Filipino-Canadian artists — Alex Canlapan, Jovelle Balani, Mervin Sison, Hazel Wallace, Jett Panganiban, Paolo Camus, the Missing Page, Mar dela Cruz and the Alapaap.
The free whole day even was spearheaded by the Philippine-Manitoba Historical Society, Inc.
Fifty years ago on Sept 21, 1972, then Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., issued Proclamation No. 1081 “Proclaiming a State of Martial Law in the Philippines.”
