Iconic Canadian department store Zellers will return in 2023 – a decade after closing most of its locations.
Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) will relaunch Zellers as an e-commerce website and will open location inside some Bay department stores across the country.
Zellers was founded in 1931 and acquired by HBC in 1978. The store hit its peak in the late 90s with about 350 locations before losing ground to big box competitors.
In 2011, HBC announced plans to sell majority of the remaining Zellers leases to Target.
Most Zellers closed down by 2013 while some liquidation outlets remained open until 2020.
Pop-up Zellers stores were opened recently inside The Bay in Burlington, Ontario and in Anjou, Quebec.
