Winnipeg local ice cream shop Chaeban Ice Cream’s “Salty Carl” was awarded Grand Champion in the recently concluded Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.
The annual event is said to be Canada’s premier showcase for excellence in livestock, crops and food and is considered the largest indoor agricultural and equestrian event in the world.
For the first time ever in 2022, some of the food competitions (cheese, butter, ready-to-eat meats and ice cream) were moved to June to ensure in season judging instead of during the actual fair time in November.
In their website, Chaeban states they sent five of its ice creams to Toronto in June packed in dry ice. Industry judges tested them along with submissions from all over Canada.
Their “Rocky Ricardo” placed first in the chocolate with inclusion category while “Salty Carl” placed first in the Other Flavor Category where it also scooped the Grand Champion title.
Chaeban Ice Cream opened on the first day of winter in December 2017 and since then, has expanded. Their ice cream can now be found in several grocery stores in many provinces in Canada in all seasons.
Owners Joseph Chaeban and wife Zainab Ali have spent months months perfecting different ice cream flavours. Before opening the shop, they worked to bring family members and refugees
from Syria, to Canada and were active memberrs of the South Osborne Syrian Refugee Initiative.
Dubbed Winnipeg’s super-premium ice cream shop, Chaeban is located at 390 Osborne Street.
The store boats of preparing ice cream from scratch and all natural. They also have vegan ice cream.
