SPORTS: 2018 Winter Olympics open in South Korea; Philippines welcomed

The 2018 Winter Olympics kick off today,   Feb 9, 2018  in Pyeongchang, South Korea.  Events run until  February 25, 2018 with  South Korean president Moon Jae-In officially declaring   PyeongChang 2018 open.

Delegations  paraded  into the  Pyeongchang Olympics Stadium  with 92 nations and  teams participating  and 2,952 athletes competing  in 102 events in seven sports.

North and South Korean athletes march together under a unified flag.  Opening ceremony guests include US Vice President Mike Pence and Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong.

The Philippines will make its  second consecutive participation after it  became part in 2014 edition in Sochi, Russia.

Michael Martinez will compete in figure skating while Asa Miller will be representing the Philippines in alpine skiing.

This is Michael’s second time to join Winter Olympics.  He  is the first skater from Southeast Asia  to qualify for the Olympics and represented the Philippines at the 2014 Wintter Olympics.  A multi-awarded  figure skater,  Michael is the 2015  Asian  Figure skating  champion and silver medalist at the 2014  Warsaw Cup.

 

 

 

Seventeen  year old  Filipino-American Asa Miller  was born in Oregon, United States with a Filipina mother who is a native of  Santa Cruz, Manila.

Miller qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics by accumulating sufficient points set by the International Ski Federation.

He has participated and won in tournaments within the United States as well as in Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.
