BLOG: Donna meets Donna

I have been tying up my hair in a pony tail for almost a year.  There were those days when I simply  don’t have time  to blowdry  during  very early morning rush.  Thought I needed a  hair cut. Who wouldn’t want a lighter and fresher feeling haha!

One time, I was riding my bike along Stafford strip on my way home when I saw this new salon.  I love trying different and new hair stylists and so I gave it a try.

Upon entering the salon,   I immediately was greeted by this lady named Donna.    The hair salon has a  modern contemporary look and  a very welcoming  atmosphere.  “Do you already have an idea what kind of hair style you want for your self?”, she asked in a nice, pleasant tone.

She looked at my hair. Saw how thick and unruly it has been, haha, and  suggested a style which I approved.  Talking in our native tounge, I had an interesting and  fun chat with her as she was doing  my hair!

Donna has been  a hairstylist for 13 years; masterstylist/ colorist for six  years at her previous employer, Regis Salon;  former government examiner for hairstyling for  three  years and  was a teacher at AVEDA Hair School for three years.  And oops, I also  saw a  photo of her with some famous hair stylists in  the United States. It was taken when she was sent for a hair convention after getting an award from former company.

I also learned  that aside from sharing the same name,  we are both  December-born and that both our  dads were graduates of  UP Los Banos. She is the 3rd of the seven children. Her father wanted her to enroll in UP because he always wanted his children to follow his footsteps. But it was her 5th brother who pursued Chemical Engineering in UP.   Donna, on the other hand, pursued a degree in Dentistry at the Centro Escolar University.  But she was two years short of  finishing the course because she fell in love and got married to her then boyfriend, now husband Erwin,  who is a mechanical engineer in the Philippines.

Donna’s interest in hair styling just came when one time she accompanied her auntie who was then visiting from Canada to a local salon in their hometown in Nueva Ecija. She was so fascinated with how the hair stylist permed her aunt’s hair and she immediately got interested to learn the skills.  “The hairstylist told me  that if  I really  wanted  to learn,  she will teach me. She told me to leave my child to my mother and come back. And  I was lucky. She gave me hands-on training.”    Being a fast and eager learner that she is,  Donna learned all the needed  skills in a snap.

She was a stylist in the Philippines for a year  when the opportunity to come to  Canada  knocked.  Upon immigrating in November 2003,    Donna decided to pursue a career in  hair styling to practice in Winnipeg.  While being a student, she received  numerous  awards. She was also given several recognition as a  masterstylist at a previous employer.  A  dedicated wife and mother of four,   “At one point, we  had to depend solely on this career when my husband got laid off  from his job for a year.”

Donna is happy she has found what she really wanted to do. She  enjoys  sharing  what she knows and loves to make people feel great about themselves.   Through the more than years of her career,   she has maintained  a  regular list of    loyal  clients  from different areas of the city who are happy  about  her service.

Donna’s  journey of  success is  inspiring and worth-sharing because she   prove  that  each one of  us  is capable of  achieving something  if  we put our heart into it and  work  hard.  But first, we  must know what  we WANT!

Now  manager and owner  of   Donna d’ Stylist Hair Salon in 360 Stafford,  Donna said  “Blessing mula kay Lord.”

Just when  our chat was wrapping up,  my hair cut was almost done.

It was nice meeting you Donna. Thank you for my new  bob cut.    I just love it!   Congratulations for your new salon and welcome to the neighborhood.
