Parents are encouraged to register their children by April 30, 2018.
The first Filipino Bilingual Program will be piloted in Seven Oaks School Division starting school year September 2018 to 2019. A bilingual program enables students to develop their ability to speak a heritage language while they learn the same curriculum outcomes as students in English or French Immersions streams.
Launched by the Seven Oaks School Division, the pilot program comes after years of community effort. The program will run ONLY if there are sufficient student registratons so if you are interested, please let them know as soon as possible.
According to Cory Juan, one of the program initiators, the language instruction will include 50 per cent English and 50 per cent Filipino.
“Curricular will be based on the Manitoba Education Curriculum. This will help newcomer Filipino children to not easily forget their own language. For those born and raised here, they will be able to appreciate their cultural background and roots.”
Open to all Filipinos and Non-Filpinos children K to Grade 3 in the school opening, coming from all schools from other divisions but priority will be for students within the catchment area of Seven Oaks in Winnipeg.
In order for the division to give it the green light, a full class size of roughly 18 students would be required for each grade.
Brian O’Leary, superintendent of the division, said the target needs to be met by April 30 in order to have proper staffing in place by the fall.
