COMMUNITY: Fil Can Denisse Samaniego pays homage to her cultural roots in “New Beginnings”

Having come  from the Philippines at the age of three, Denisse  Samaniego can relate to her character as “Hazel” in this stage  show  that  touches on the struggles and achievements of new immigrants.

“This is very important to me because it’s the first time I get to play a role as Filipino in a story that is close to my heart, ” she gushed.

Denisse is one of the casts of  “New Beginnings” ,   a  90-minute show that revolves around  real life experiences of   Canada’s  immigrants, refugees  and newcomers.

“Many people, like my parents, even if they are professionals  back home  have to start again when they come here.  I saw the  struggle in their  journey,”  Denisse narrates in  an interview on CKJS Good Morning  Philippines.

“New Beginnings” is a collaboration of   20 artists,  performers and musicians in one powerful production.

“It is a  little bit of everything– dance, music, video and storytelling.  A celebration of community coming together”,   shares Artistic Director Hope Mcintyrre.

Denisse could not hide her excitement  in having to  work with a powercast of  diversed  talents  and a creative production team.

Fun!  I  learned a  mixture of everything. I learned African dance too.  This  experience also gave me the  chance to appreciate different cultures as I embrace my own.”

“New Beginnings” is Denisse’ debut performance with Sarasvàti Productions as well as her first professional job as a performer.

Denisse is currently a third-year Theatre and Education student at University of Winnipeg.    She was crowned Miss Teenage Manitoba in 2016.

While “New Beginnings” sends  thought-provoking  messages  about the challenges of  resettlement snd displacement, the show is great entertainment for all.

“It is a must-see show that  is entertaining, fun and exciting”,  Hope shares.

Overall, it is  a feel good  show that  will make the audience sing and dance along and  appreciate  how great  it is  to live   in a free country like Canada.
